Several shops were looted and set alight in Malvern in the Johannesburg CBD area on 1 September 2019. The looting and violence spread overnight to Denver and other areas.
An estimated 50 shops have been looted and more than 50 vehicles burnt this morning in Malvern, Johannesburg after a group of people went on a rampage. This is claimed to fueled by the death of 3 people in a building fire in Jeppestown on Sunday.
This follows a letter that earlier circulated on social media calling for a shutdown in protest against foreign nationals for dealing in drugs and crime and taking away South African jobs. Many foreign owned shops and businesses have been affected and Police have confirmed that more than 30 people have now been arrested linked to this violence.
